Do you have an old wooden fence that needs to come down? Rather, have you taken the fence down and now wonder what could you possibly do with the materials? Don’t throw them away, reuse them… Create a wainscot on one wall or several – this look works great for a Country or Adirondack theme.

Decide how tall you want your wainscot/headboard to look first… here, we decided on 52″ finished height. It is a good idea to either run a string using small tacks or use a picture hanging laser (should you have that nifty little gadget) for a guide on the top line to insure your boards are all at the same height.

Next, select the best looking boards, choose ones that aren’t warped or split. Lightly sand off the “rough splinters” but don’t over sand, you want to maintain the “weathered-look”.

Once you have prepped your boards, find your center of the wall so you can work out to each corner. This will eliminate all the cut pieces on one side and it will look more symmetrical. When you are ready, install the boards tightly against one another along the wall. Using your guide line, make sure you keep them level (horizontally) at the top. Don’t worry about gaps at the bottom where they meet the floor, you are going to cover those up.

Use the same boards as a baseboard once the vertical boards are installed. Because it will take several boards to do the base board, keep in mind that where there will be seams, you want to keep the cut at a 90 degree angle, don’t miter cut the boards. There are no 45 degree angles in this look.

For a cap at the top of the wainscot, you can cut the boards in half and use them to finish off your look.

Apply a clear, satin polyurethane to keep it fresh. Voila! You have a professional looking wainscot with the do-it-yourself cost!

Plumbing is a dirty job…

Properly laying in all the water and drain lines is critical to a properly functioning system…because once the concrete is placed, it’s extremely difficult (and costly) to fix.

Gone are the days of copper lines and cast iron drain lines. Nowadays, the industry uses a product called Pex for water lines and drain lines are PVC.

Pex is great to work with…it is easier to bend and while it can freeze at very cold temps, it will not burst. Which you can appreciate if you have ever had a pipe burst inside your home.

A wise man builds his house upon the rock….making sure a solid foundation is in place is critical to the rest of the project. All our foundations are monolithic, in other words, all piers, footings, and slab are placed at the same time.
Now after a pretty decent and needed rain, we are just waiting on the plumber…..
